Orlando International Airport Ready for Busy Thanksgiving Holiday Travel Season Ranked Number Two in Nation for Best Overall Airport

ORLANDO, FL. – As Orlando International Airport (MCO) enters into the busy Thanksgiving holiday travel season it does so ranked as one of the best airports in the country. Travelpulse.com, one of the nation’s most visited travel information sites, ranks Orlando International as number two in overall airport satisfaction. In the survey, of the nation’s top 100 airports, Orlando International actually ranked number one in two categories, Family Friendliness and Ease of Access. Atlanta ranked number one in the survey.

“While other airport survey’s measure things that we have no control over, Travelpulse.com’s survey takes a comprehensive look at many variables such as ease of access and amenities offered to draw a more complete conclusion of how we really stack up,” says Frank Kruppenbacher, Chairman of the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority. “The results inspire us to continue focusing on the passenger and their Orlando Experience.”

Orlando International Airport is expecting nearly 10 percent more passenger traffic this Thanksgiving holiday travel season. In total more than 1.4 million travelers will move through MCO during the 12-day Thanksgiving period which runs from November 17th through November 28th.

Holiday Traffic Statistics:

  • Busiest Travel Day: Saturday, November 26 = 133,905
  • Least Busy Travel Day: Thursday, November 24 = 95,029

To better accommodate the increase in traffic, Orlando International is undertaking a number of measures to improve efficiency and enhance the overall travel experience.

“We are focusing on a number of key areas that we feel will help travelers during the busy holiday season,” says Phil Brown, Executive Director of the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority. “Technology and Customer Service are priority areas that we have placed a great deal of emphasis on during this construction phase to help move record numbers of passengers through our facilities.”

Technology:

  • New state-of-the-art sensors have been installed at the security checkpoints to monitor and report passenger wait times
  • The current MCO App has been enhanced with the latest blue dot technology to assist with point-to-point terminal directions
  • A new MCO App is under development and will be ready for the December holiday travel season
  • New digital display ticket counters are being installed to provide more information for travelers

The Greater Orlando Aviation Authority partnered with Synect to create the Displayground. The Displayground will be one of the largest high-resolution video walls in the world, spanning the length of five football fields. This massive canvas delivers wayfinding, flight information, security information and other dynamic travel-related information to passengers at check-in. This information is paired with games and engaging media from the airport and airlines that decreases perceived wait times by keeping passengers informed and entertained. The Displayground video wall is part of a network that fully integrates with airport systems to enable the delivery of media, information, entertainment and an enhanced passenger experience throughout the airport. “We are delighted to partner with the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority on this incredible initiative,” CEO and Founder of Synect Yahav Ran says. “With one innovative project, we are addressing three major points of the passenger journey, curbside, check-in and wayfinding, all aimed to remove stress from the operator to the

Customer Service:

  • New multi-lingual ambassadors have been hired to assist travelers from all over the world along every step of their journey at Orlando International
  • New comfortable seating has been installed to handle a record number of travelers
  • New charging stations, hundreds of electrical access points have been installed throughout the terminal for passengers to recharge their electronic devices
  • Wayfinding kiosks have been replaced and updated with clearer easier to read directions
  • Wayfinding signage around the airport complex has been reviewed and simplified to aid in passenger movement throughout the terminal with a minimal amount of confusion
  • Hemisphere Restaurant at the Hyatt Hotel has been renovated to better reflect the Central Florida environment and provide another dining option for MCO guests and the community
  • Added more musical entertainment to help reduce stress and enhance the overall Orlando Experience for travelers prior to security
  • Reconfigured seating areas to help with passenger flow through the terminal complex

Holiday Travel Tips:

  • Arrive inside the terminal at least two hours in advance for domestic and three hours in advance for international travel
  • With record traffic the parking garages are filling fast. Arrive at the airport allowing enough time to locate a parking space without infringing upon your processing time for tickets and security
  • Pack lightly
  • Do NOT make light hearted jokes about security
  • Follow the TSA 3-1-1 rules for carry-on luggage (3 ounces of liquids or gels in 1 clear zip lock bag and only 1 bag per passenger)
