6/5/2013 - Orlando International Airport Prepping for Historic Liberty Weekend Celebration

Liberty Weekend

Orlando, FL. – An evening celebrating America will feature inspirational music and recognition of a distinguished local veteran. On Saturday, June 29, 2013 at 7:45 p.m., Liberty Weekend will mark an exciting new addition to the program—the inaugural presentation of the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority’s Veterans Award. Throughout history, the courage and achievements of America’s heroes have helped define a young nation and elevate it to global prominence. To salute that spirit of selflessness and fortitude, this annual award was created to honor a Central Florida veteran for his or her service and recognize their contributions to the aviation community.

Liberty Weekend festivities can be enjoyed in the Hyatt Regency Atrium in Orlando International Airport. This year’s theme “Liberty Fanfare” will feature the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra performing patriotic music and a selection of popular favorites. The concert is free to the public and those attending will receive commemorative American flags and three hours of complimentary parking.

Adding to the ambience of the event will be the airport’s newest art installation “The Remembrance Poppies.” Located around the Atrium’s fountain area, the 50 tempered-glass poppies created by artist Craig Mitchell Smith pay homage to the American Legion’s symbol of tribute to fallen soldiers since World War I. The exhibit will be on display through November, marking Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Veterans Day.
