3/16/2011 - Local Aviation Hero, Colonel Joe Kittinger, Re-Opens Park in His Honor at Orlando Executive Airport
ORLANDO, FL. - Originally dedicated and opened in September of 1992, Colonel Joe Kittinger Park at Orlando Executive Airport has returned to service following construction on nearby toll road 408. Greater Orlando Aviation Authority Chairman, Cesar E. Calvet, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and Colonel Joe Kittinger were on hand to re-affirm the mission of the park and to reflect on the contributions to aviation made by Colonel Kittinger. During his lifetime, Colonel Kittinger has set a number of aviation records and milestones, some of which still stand to this very day, including being the first man to ever travel at the speed of sound, 714 mph, without a plane or spacecraft.

“I hope that future pilots and astronauts find inspiration in soaring to the heavens by having fun at this park,” says Colonel Joe Kittinger. “Records are nice and wonderful to achieve but I think one thing that really inspires Colonel Kittinger is passing on his love of aviation to another generation. And this park is just one way of ensuring his legacy and doing that. Local boys and girls will be able to see and hear planes take off and land while here having fun,” says Cesar E. Calvet, Chairman of the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority. Colonel Joe Kittinger Park features aviation themed apparatus for children to play on along with a state-of-the-art audio system that allows park attendees to listen to air traffic communications at Orlando Executive Airport. The park is located at the corner of Crystal Lake Drive and South Street at Orlando Executive Airport.
