ORLANDO, FL Orlando International Airport ranked 7th fastest growing major airport in the United States in 2003. According to the latest preliminary rankings released by the Airports Council International (ACI), the airport is also the 11th fastest growing major airport in the world. In terms of passenger traffic, Orlando International Airport now ranks 15th largest in the country and 23rd largest in the world last year compared to its previous 2002 ranking of 16th and 28th , respectively. ACI should be releasing the final rankings in June.
In February, the latest reported month, total passenger traffic increased 20.80 percent to 2,519,817 passengers at Orlando International Airport compared to the same month last year. This February contained one more day than the previous year.
C.W. Jennings, Executive Director of the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority commented: "We are encouraged by the increases in passenger traffic in both domestic and international travel. Domestically, this is one of the peak travel seasons that includes Spring Break and holiday schedules across the country."
International traffic increased 18.15 percent over the previous year with 161,689 passengers reported, while domestic traffic increased 20.99 percent to 2,358,128 passengers.
Significant changes in scheduled service for the month included Continental Express starting service to Houston, Texas; JetBlue Airways increasing service to New Yorks JFK; and Virgin Atlantic increasing service to Londons Gatwick Airport.
Total cargo traffic at Orlando International Airport showed a 1.72 percent increase to 18,283 tons.
February aircraft operations at Orlando International Airport increased 12.46 percent, with total traffic reported of 25,485 arrivals and departures.
Aircraft operations at Orlando Executive Airport totaled 12,835, a decrease of 9.50 percent.
For the past twelve months ending February 29, 2004, passengers using Orlando International Airport totaled 28,023,819.
